The purpose of a blanket is to keep you warm when it’s cold.  Babies get cold too, in fact, more often than the rest of us, maybe aside from the elderly.  That is part of why baby blankets are so popular.  They are popular as gifts and lots of people even make them for babies.  But despite being such popular gifts, are they really that necessary?

If you’re expecting a baby or already have one, a few blankets for the him or her is absolutely necessary.  Even if it’s summer and warm, you want to have them on hand just in case it gets cold.  Does that mean you need 20 baby blankets?  Absolutely not.

The popularity comes from many things.  First of all, they are simple and easy.  People find it easy to just pick up a pretty blanket that they know will always “fit” the baby for a least the first few years of their life.   Usually, baby blankets are ‘one size fits all’.

Another reason is that a baby blanket can be personalized.  If a person is crafty, they may crochet, knit, or quilt a blanket.  This makes it a more personalized gift because they made it with their own two hands.  They also have the option to personalize it further by putting the baby’s name on it if they already know it.   In fact, even purchased blankets can be personalized in this way.

As a new parent, accepting baby gifts is a lot of fun and very exciting.  Whether you receive a wide variety of gifts along with 20 baby blankets or just a few, you should accept the gifts graciously because they were probably made out of love for you and your future child.  You can also pass some on to other new parents or charities if you so desire.
