Rescuing a Dog
Dogs are incredibly popular as pets for a variety of reasons. They are friendly, loyal and good fun. Some people like to buy pedigree breeds for showing while others are quite happy with a mongrel. If you don’t want a pedigree then you should consider going to a dog rescue home. Every year thousands of dogs are taken to dogs’ homes to be re-homed. They are taken for a variety of reasons from an owner having died to being part of an unwanted litter.
When you arrive at the rescue centre you will be greeted and questioned about your suitability as a dog owner and the type of dog that you require. Some dogs are in need of a quiet home without children while others thrive on a busy household. You will also need to make sure that you inform them of any other pets that you have.
Once you have answered their questions you will be taken to see some dogs that they think might suit you. Most re-homing centres won’t take on aggressive dogs but you may need to do some dog behaviour training when you get home as often the dogs won’t have been trained in any way prior to coming with you.
Before you take your new dog home make sure that you have all the equipment necessary to make him feel comfortable and happy. A dog kennel is well known to be a good way to make a dog feel safe as it is an enclosed space which resembles a den. Your dog will soon learn that he can escape there when he wants some peace and quiet. You can choose between indoor dog kennels, which tend to be smaller, lightweight and made from plastic or outdoor wooden dog kennels or metal cages. Other essential items are food and drink bowls and a wide selection of dog toys to keep him entertained.
The staff from the dogs’ home will often come and do a home visit a short while after you’ve taken him home to ensure that he is settling in well.
