Musical Jewelry Boxes Have Come A Long Way

When I was a child I always wanted to be a ballerina. Ballerinas were always so elegant with their beautiful flowing dresses and the way they danced with poise and grace. As a child I would talk incessantly about how I was going to be a ballerina as I danced around the house trying to mimic their every move. My mother knew this was just a phase in my life, after all every little girl wants to be a ballerina when they are little right? However, my love of ballerinas did last in one way. When I was going through my ballerina phase, my mother purchased me a small wooden jewelry box with a dancing ballerina inside. It was a small pink box with hearts on the outside. When you opened the top there was a beautiful ballerina that would pop up and spin to the music. In fact, I still have the jewelry box to this day sitting on my dresser.

Recently, my niece was visiting and she saw the small pink jewelry box sitting on my dresser and asked me about it. She is at the age where she still wishes she could be a ballerina so I told her to open it up. When she did, her eyes lit up as the ballerina popped up and began to dance. Right there and then, I decided that I would get her a jewelry box with a dancing ballerina for her birthday which was only a couple of months away.

When I started my search for a musical jewelry box, I was amazed to find out how many different kinds of musical jewelry boxes exist today. Maybe they always existed in this number, however it seems that the choices have grown. One of the first things that I noticed is that like many other things, wooden boxes are not the only choice. In many regards it seems that plastic has trumped wood. Maybe that is appropriate for children, however, it seemed cheesy to me and wood was what I desired. Additionally, I was amazed at how dancing ballerinas have now morphed into all kinds of other dancing creatures and things such as carousels, angels and even dogs. The choice of music has also grown. Gone are the days where the only choice of song is Swan Lake. Today you can find musical jewelry boxes that play holiday music, rock music, jazz, custom selections as well as multiple songs. Musical jewelry boxes have sure come a long way and changed a lot since my day.

As I began to look at all the different choice available, I realized that maybe a dancing ballerina was not the perfect choice for my niece. Times change, and knowing that my niece loved horses and was a country girl at heart, I chose a musical jewelry box with a carousel scene consisting of several horses that danced in a circle. It was a wooden jewelry box that was pink on the outside with horses painted on the side. The inside consisted of a spinning carousel with a mirror behind it, much like the box that I had as a child. Her birthday is coming up in a few days and I am hopeful that I chose the right gift, one that will provide her with fond memories that will last a lifetime much like the musical jewelry box that I received as a child.
